Women’s Health: Your Obstetrician and Family Planning

Women’s Health

Women’s health is extremely important. Not only do women have to worry about normal health risks associated with anyone, be they male or female, but they also have to worry about gynecological needs, obstetrics, infertility, etc. It is very important for women to stay on top of their health and make sure to have annual check ups with their gynecologist.

Obstetrician

Finding the right obstetrician is an important task. When a woman finds out she is pregnant, it is a life changing moment. From that day forward, many women find themselves dedicating their mind, body, and soul to their pregnancy. Having confidence in one’s obstetrician is important, and feeling comfortable during prenatal care, during labor and delivery, and during the postpartum phase is extremely important for all women. Some obstetric services include: Nuchal Translucency testing, routine and 4-D ultrasound, and nonstress testing.

Family Planning

There are a variety of family planning techniques that women should be familiar with. First and foremost, it is important to be well educated on birth control and the different birth control methods that women have the option of choosing from. Here is a list of birth control methods:

  • Natural Family Planning
  • Barrier Methods, such as condoms and diaphragms
  • Combined Hormonal Contraception, including the birth control pill, patch, and ring
  • Depo Provera—an injection received every 3 months
  • Implanon—a single rod, which is implanted in the arm during a short in-office procedure and provides protection for up to 3 years
  • Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices (IUD)—Mirena, the 5-year IUD, and Paragard, the 10-year IUD; both are inserted during a short office visit
  • Female Sterillization—both traditional methods and Essure
  • Vasectomy (for men)

It is extremely important to discuss the benefits and possible risks associated with each of these birth control methods so that you can know which option is best for you.
