Anorexia and Bulimia Recovery Treatment Programs

Anorexia and Its Affect on Men

Although not as many men are not as affected by anorexia as women, the issue should be addressed so that those suffering will be influenced to seek help. Many social and cultural norms imply that anorexia is only a disease that afflicts women. In fact, men who are suffering from anorexia may feel a greater burden to hide their problem. They may feel pressure to act like nothing is wrong and deny that they are suffering from an eating disorder. In fact, many male movie stars, musicians, and athletes have come forward about successfully overcoming anorexia. There is no doubt that there are many male celebrities who the public does not know about.

Teenagers Who Binge and Purge

Binge and purge disorder is common among teenagers. Binging and purging is characterized as eating large quantities of food rapidly past the point of feeling full. Symptoms may include hoarding food, eating late at night, and secretive eating habits to hide the disorder. Individuals may feel a lack of control and cannot manage their consumption habits. So, what can be done about this disorder? There are many treatment options that can help. Appetite suppressants, self-help groups, and therapy can aide in eating disorder recovery. Binge and purge disorder is so dangerous because it is paired with the extreme behaviors of an eating spree and then the restriction of food in attempt to balance out the calories consumed.

The Road to Bulimia Recovery

Bulimia consists of purging behaviors which are extremely harmful on the human body. Many times, individuals will use laxatives, enemas, and other chemical methods to cleanse the body. Non-purging bulimics do not engage in these behaviors and instead may exercise to the point of exhaustion. Bulimia recovery helps in overcoming this deadly eating disorder. It is important to set small achievable goals to build upon a healthy new lifestyle. Treatment also puts the emphasis on long-term maintenance and relapse prevention. Only about one in ten people suffering from eating disorders get the help that they need. Hopefully, a raised awareness of eating disorder treatment will help remove the shame and guilt that is carried. Everyone deserves to get help in their recovery and regain a sense of love and happiness that they had in their life.
