Eating Disorder Outpatient Programs For Anorexia Nervosa
What Are Eating Disorders?
Eating disorders are so prevalent in our society today. In such a media saturated culture, the message that being thin and beautiful is the key to success is perpetuated constantly. Take a look at the celebrity’s that we follow—the majority are thin, beautiful, and rich, and this translates into a message that says in order to be rich and popular we must have the qualities that these people contain. They make it look so easy, but we forget that many, if not all of them, have a personal trainer, a hair stylist, a makeup artist, a nutritionist, etc. With these images constantly being shoved in our faces, it is not surprising that 70 million individuals are affected by eating disorders worldwide. Studies show that as many as 1 in 5 women suffer from an eating disorder. This is not only a female affliction as 10 – 15% of males are amongst the diagnosed.
Anorexia Nervosa
There are a number of different eating disorders. Anorexia nervosa, bulimia, compulsive overeating or binge eating, and compulsive exercise are the most common eating disorders. Like any other addiction or disorder, eating disorders are extremely hard to escape. Many who try to recover on their own relapse and continue the cycle. If you or someone you know is suffering from an eating disorder seek treatment immediately.
Eating Disorder Outpatient
There are eating disorder outpatient programs that offer private counseling, nutritional counseling, psychotherapy, group therapy, 12-step meetings, etc. For more severe cases, there are rehabilitation centers that provide a warm, comfortable homelike setting where you can go to recover and live a life free of obsession and negativity. Throughout treatment, it is important to address both the psychological and physical aspects of the problem. A common misconception is that eating disorders are not a serious illness, but rather a disorder that is more about getting attention. However, this is not the case. Eating disorders are a mental illness and disorder that require a great deal of treatment to overcome.
