Family Treatment Programs

Another important form of therapy that proves to be beneficial for many is family therapy. Oftentimes a drug addict or an alcoholic loses connection with their family members throughout the life of their addiction. They slowly break away and forget how important family is. Family treatment programs are often difficult. People tend to feel dismay over family therapy due to the immense guilt and shame they feel. Learning to communicate as a family and support each other in the correct manner is an important part of the recovery process. It is a healing process for not only the recovering individual, but for the entire family. In some cases it is best to wait to begin family therapy until the recovering individual has made a certain amount of progress. Being somewhat down the line in recovery can make the family therapy much more beneficial and meaningful to both the recovering individual and the family3. Knowing that there is a huge web of support is pertinent to the recovery of an addict, and reforming a familial bond is a good way to form this support system.
