Eating Disorders Can Affect People in All Situations

For the people who are diagnosed with an eating disorder, it can be something that they struggle with for years of their lives even after attending a depression treatment center. An eating disorder like anorexia or bulimia does not always subside even when circumstances can make it very dangerous to continue on with that behavior. It is a mental illness that a person cannot control even if logic and common would tell the average person that they need to eat normally. For example, many people that find out they are pregnant struggle with letting go of their anorexic behaviors but are still compelled by their mental illness to engage in what is sometimes called pregorexia. This is a term that basically means they are purposefully avoiding the natural weight gain that should occur in the event of a pregnancy. This type of disordered eating hurts not only themselves but their unborn child who needs the nutrients that they provide them.
Another example in which an eating disorder might affect someone in a difficult situation in life is when they are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Their inclination might not be to maintain their best health in spite of their condition because they are still fueled by their mental illness. This is when problems like diabulimia start to occur as the patient avoids their insulin shots because it can cause weight loss. This is a situation in which they cannot focus on the importance of their health because of their eating disorder and they can put themselves in a very dangerous place. With treatment they can stop harming themselves by refraining from taking the recommended amount of insulin and stay in good condition.
